DO YOU NEED HELP UNDERSTANDING THE FINANCIAL AID PROCESS AND APPLYNG FOR SCHOLARSHIPS TO HELP PAY FOR COLLEGE?

Learn Step-By-Step Instructions on How to Apply for Financial Aid and Most Importantly - Scholarships.

FROM: Sedgwick Hines

Dear Students and Parents:

You’re probably looking for financial aid and scholarships to help pay for college costs as you apply to various colleges for admission.  Applying for financial aid and scholarships may seem like a confusing process, but if you are provided with easy to understand information; the financial aid process can be fairly simple.

If you plan to attend a college, trade, technical, or vocational school, you should apply for financial aid and scholarships. You should never assume that you are not eligible for financial aid based on your grades or family’s income.  Scholarships, grants, work-study, and students loans are awarded to students based on financial need and/or merit/academic achievements (such as test scores, grade point average, gender, ethnicity, athletic talents, artistic talents, and other merits).

Let’s review two very important steps:

  • Your first step to applying for financial aid and scholarships is to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (aka FAFSA).  The FAFSA is used to determine your eligibility for federal aid.  State education agencies and colleges also use the information provided on your FAFSA to determine your eligibility for state and school aid.
  • Your next step is to start your scholarship search early.  You should apply to all the scholarships (at least 20 scholarships) in which you are eligible for, regardless of the award amounts.  Remember, every dollar counts and each dollar will help you pay for college.  Your goal should be to attend school for FREE or at least close to free without taking out a lot of student loans.

The Path to Successfully Applying for
Financial Aid and Scholarships

I know that the path to successfully applying for financial aid and scholarships has four steps:

bigcheckmark Step 1:

You and your parent(s) must understand the basics of financial aid, how the financial aid process works, when to apply for financial aid, how financial aid is awarded and disbursed, and other key basic understandings.

bigcheckmark Step 2:
You must document information about yourself and your family to help you identify and apply for scholarships.  The information you document will also help you complete scholarship applications in a timely fashion.

bigcheckmark Step 3:
You must know where to look for scholarships by identifying the various scholarship and college funding sources at the national level, state level, and local areas in your city.  You must also use the free scholarship search resources on the Internet.

bigcheckmark Step 4:
You must complete and submit professional looking scholarship application packets to the scholarship providers to increase your chances of winning numerous scholarships.  Just remember that your scholarship applications and all supporting documents represent you to the scholarship providers; and you want to convey that you are a serious and worthy candidate for their scholarship.

How do I know about the financial aid process?
Well,  it cost me approximately $130,000 to attend Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana.  Although, I received nearly $90,000 in scholarships, grants, and institutional aid to help pay for college.  I still had to borrow close to $40,000 in Student, PLUS, and Alternative loans to help pay for college and flight training costs.  Knowing what I know now, I should have applied to more scholarships .  Howerever, financial aid and scholarships allowed me to pursue my childhood dream of becoming a professional airline pilot.  (Click here if you'd like to read more about my financial aid experience...)

After graduating from college, I wrote and published my first book titled “Aviation Scholarship Directory” to help students find aviation scholarships.  After publishing the second edition of this book, I was asked numerous questions by students and parents about the financial aid process.

Some of the questions asked by past students and parents may be the same questions that you and your parents are asking yourselves:

redcheckbox How am I going to pay for college?
redcheckbox What is the financial aid process?
redcheckbox How do I apply for financial aid?
redcheckbox What are the different types of financial aid?
redcheckbox What is the FAFSA and how do I complete this form?
redcheckbox Am I eligible for financial aid?
redcheckbox My parents make too much money, do I qualify for scholarships?
redcheckbox Where are the scholarships located?
redcheckbox When should I start applying for scholarships?
redcheckbox How do I increase my chances of winning scholarships?

After answering their questions, I realized that most students and parents don’t have a clue about the financial aid process, how to search and apply for scholarships, or how to increasing their chances of winning scholarships.

So I wrote The Scholarship Workbook to simplify the entire financial aid and scholarship process for students and parents by making it a step-by-step guide.
